This week we talked about literature and our favorite books as children. The series I loved the most in elementary school included Magic Tree House and Junie B. Jones. So, when I went with my nieces to Pioneer Book, I suggested both these series because they had just started reading chapter books with their parents. Then, my sister-in-law, stood in front of the Junie B. Jones asking the kids to choose from the Magic Tree House series. She then explained that she hated the way Junie talks and whines and did not want her kids to pick this up. I had never thought of this because I just always remember loving the books, but she definitely doesn't teach the best behaviors.
This made me reflect deeper about the books I want my children to read. Even though I read the book as a child and remember enjoying it, this might not be the best measure for determining if its the best book for my child to read. A better measure might be what the book actually teaches like imagination in the Magic Tree House.
