To whom it may concern,
I am writing to you concerning the lack of diversity among contestants of bachelors and bachelorettes. First of all, I enjoy watching your show as many Americans do. Sometimes, the drama is over the top, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t waste time I could be working on homework to sit down and watch your show.
I am currently studying media at my university and especially its impact on viewers and families. Your show COULD have a very powerful impact on its viewers for the better if there was more racial diversity in the contestants. Minorities are rarely portrayed in today’s American media and when they are portrayed, they are often stereotyped. I feel that the Bachelor and Bachelorette have gotten better with portraying African Americans with the increase of black contestants on Becca’s season and Rachel being the first black bachelorette. I would like to see Hispanics, Asians, Pacific Islanders and Native Americans portrayed more in the contestants as well as the lead bachelor and bachelorette.
A wider audience would be reached if the shows had a variety of races and increase viewership. Having a majority white, wealthy cast limits your audience to a majority white audience; the main motive to watch tv shows is because one can relate to the characters.
Having a more diverse can increase viewership and can also help change our nation for the better. America continues to become a more welcoming place of differences, however, it is hard to accept something when it is new to us. Showing mixed-couples on television can help to educate people who have not experienced much diversity in their life.
I mentioned before that when minorities are portrayed they often stereotyped. This is very damaging for those watching the show. As you consider including more diversity in show, please show contestants who break these stereotypes in an effort to educate America and make it a better place for everyone.
Thank you for your time,
Brittany Pixton
