My husband and I recently started watching "How I Met Your Mother" together and it is now one of my favorite shows. I am a little late onto this band wagon because I saw one episode with some friends in high school and that specific episode was very sexual and I didn't enjoy it. However, six years later, it is now one of my favorites.
I have been reflecting on this change recently. If is was too sexual for me in high school, why do I now feel that it is not only appropriate to watch, but also find it so hilarious? The show portrays single adult friends living in New York and the show revolves around relationships and alcohol. Because of this, the show is not meant for sophomores in high school. However, as an adult, these experiences the characters are going through are much more relatable.
I do enjoy the show, but it's portrayal of men and women, how to cope with problems, relationships and sex sometimes bother me. However, I still watch the show. This is the dangerous side to media. It may not be conveying the best message, but they know how to get us to sit and watch more with cliff hangers and other strategies.
